Formative Assement Feedback

On Tuesday I had my formative assessment with Mike Smith. He was mainly assing concept work and contributions to Pre- Production. From my assessment, I found out that I need to submit at least 10 finished pieces of concept art with sketches and research. So far I have 3 pieces of concept which are black and white. I'm looking to do 5 pieces of enviroment concept art in colour for Pirates Produce and 2 more colour enviroment pieces for JB's Dummy story. Mike suggested to me to play with scale when doing the concept for the Dummy project. He also suggested that I look into the style of Pinocleo. The Dummy Project does not have a visual style at the moment. JB wants the look of his film to be realistic and similar to Pixar!? (can't see that happening). Louis's Pirates Produce Project is coming on well and has a very cartoony Team Fortress Style which will be apealling to his target audience of children. Mikes only problem is that Pirates Produce has almost too many people working on it.

Overall, the assessment was helpful and straight to the point which I like. I need to submit my concept work on CD by the end of term.

Dummy Concept Art

I've kept the concept art Black and White because we were advised to by one of our guest lecturers. The reson for this is that it emphasizes lighting and mood and stands out from a distcance. I painted this straight into Photoshop.

Reference Images for Art Shop

There are a lot of objects that are common in the reference images such as pine wooden shelves, pastel treys, and stacks of note pads and sketch books. The art shop images seem colourful during the day but our dummy scene is going to be shot at night. The main problem that I can see with the art shop enviroment, is that it may look too cluttered. There also aren't many windows inside an art shop so the scene would be made up of artificial light.

Enviroment Ideas for Dummy group

We were originally thinking of either having the setting as an art shop or a desk. I think that a desk because of the range of items and objects that people leave on a desk. A desk can also tell you a lot about the type of person that works there which could reflect onto the dummies personality.

Male Dummy

The male dummy will look something similar to these. The style will be realistic as JB wants to composite the dummies in to live action.

Dummy Story Idea

A lonely dummy crawls out of its packaging and yawns. He looks at the window and shields his eyes from the dreamy morning sunlight. He sits down with his head in his hands looking at the other Dummy boxes, which have both a male dummy and a female dummy. He gets up and then kicks one of the Dummy packages with jealousy and then sighs. The Dummy tries to make friends with other female Dummy’s in the shop, but they all have dummy boyfriends. The Dummy’s attention is caught by strange sounds coming from the top shelf in the toyshop. The dummy is intrigued by the sounds and makes his way to the top. Once he gets to the top, he finds a lady Dummy sitting down with her head in her hands. They look at each other and smile. They hold hands and the camera zooms out.

Pirates Produce Story Ideas

1

Begining

I feel that the pirates should brake into the super market with a treasure map thinking that there is gold hidden there.

Middle

Security guard chases them around the store while the pirates knock over shelves and products trying to find the treasure.

End

The Pirates find the treasure in a cereal box with their pictures on the front which advertises the cereal.

2

Begining

Security Guard is closing up the super market. He takes some pills for his head ache. He begins to hollucinate after taking to many and starts seeing pirates running about.

Middle

He gets chased and terrorised by the pirates in the store.

End

The pirates disappear and the Security guard is runs out of the super market and quits his job.

I've got a Laptop! (and update)

Okay, I have a laptop to work with now so I can be more productive when I'm at college. On the Monday I was helping out with the story ideas for both the Dummy group and the Pirates Pruduce group. The idea for the Dummy group has completely changed to a male dummy trying to impress a female dummy with gifts which she rejects one by one. Finally the male dummy cuts out his heart which is made from wood and gives it to her. The storyline ends with the female dummy accepting the heart. I think the idea is simple and strong but I feel that the ending lets it down. I feel there should be a twist or a punch line at the end because the story builds up the audience to a climax.

The Pirates produce idea needs a lot of work and decision making. The main characters which are Pirates do not fit well with the enviroment of a supermarket. The problem is that most people have an idealisation of what a pirate looks like and where they live. Pirate Produce would need at least 30 seconds to a minute to explain why the pirates are in a super market.

The concept work for the dummy group is improving, but we need more. Pirates Produce have a lot of visual research and concept.

My aim this week is to get some concept up for both groups.

Freelancing

I will be freelancing for two projects during my BA Animation year. I will mainly be focusing on production roles such as modelling and texturing but I will also be helping out with pre-production as well. The two projects that I will be working on at the moment are "Dummy"by JB and "Pirates" by Louise. So far we are in the process of making creating the story line and concept art.
